1:18:49 overloading of the C language…! 😅
What program did he use to make those animations? Does anyone know?
Squeak Etoys. It was not "animations" but a programmable environment that was real running programs. Nowadays a web based emulator called Squeak JS by Vanessa Freudenberg is available. You can go to squeak.js.org/ and click on "Etoys".
@@yoshikiohshima Thank you for the answer. Great to see its still exists 🙂 It seems to have a lot of potential for teachers who want to explain stuff.
I've listened to some of Alan Kay's old talks on RUclips on object oriented programming. It's a subject I find interesting as I build my little website ui components today. Thinking about when to pass computed state down through several children or only like on_event that trigger functions or both and writing methods like Alan mentioned in this about us not just having a brain but a bunch of mini brains. I'm sure Alan has learned a ton since some of these older vids of him and would be sweet to here him talk endlessly about life and code I don't care about those kids in the classroom that were waiting for the bell to ring to hang up on Alan I'd listen all day. Hopefully more of Alan in the coming years before brain deminishes
Love this guy
love to replace bsd n icewm with smalltalk ont he metal but it doesnt work
I was in Neil Postman's class for three years. He was an interesting guy. Besides his academic work, he was an all-american basketball player and a AAA minor league baseball player.
10:05 When Alan Kay talks about encapsulation, he refers to the environment-not state. His type of encapsulation is closer to that of functional programming than of C++-styled languages.
We are a long way from HyperCard.
As always, thank you for sharing computing history with us!
I always learn so much from Alan. Appreciate this upload
I choose elixir for OOP (not FP) because of him.
Interesting. Who is this guy?
In my opinion, this is tremendously relevant.
1:36:05 How interesting. A recent 'joke' I heard was that AI will never be able to replace Accountants for many reasons. 1: There are gray areas in the technical side of accounting... 2: Human accountants are dirt cheap in comparison! (if you consider the cost of development, or just the service itself) There is something about it.
Now do now
This was amazing, thank you.
I feel so unexamined ...
Does anyone know what software Mr. Kay used for his presentation (I believe it might be some version of Squeak)?
I think this talk was done in Keynote on Mac.
You guys aware that Alan Kay has been actively answering questions on QUORA ? 634 answers so far.
Boy, you were exactly the right person to ask about "Other Talks by Alan Kay" ! !!
PINK BRAINS
so good
Can someone in these comments please recommend an even better talk given by Alan Kay, better than this one?
There obviously is no single "better talk", but if you look at this list: tinlizzie.org/IA/index.php/Talks_by_Alan_Kay and look for Turing Award Lecture for example, or perhaps some later ones in 2010's might be interesting to you.
Some of my favorite quotes from this presentation: “Scaling more or less destroys communication." “The burden on ‘writers’ is to shape what is to be ‘read’ in ways that help guide the reader’s internal processes to make a similar model to that held by the writer.” “Shared context is what we’re looking for. What we do with language is point into what we think is the shared context between us and the other person.” “At Bell Labs if you walked around back before the divestiture, you would occasionally see a sign that would say, ‘Either do something very useful or very beautiful.’ I’ve never seen a sign like that at Google Research. That’s a huge problem.” ”Synergy: It’s what happens in the halls. How many beer-laden lunches do you have? How many bike rides to the top of the hills around Palo Alto?” “What everybody at PARC knew was that the purpose of arguing is not to win, but to illuminate. And in fact, when people started getting heated, [Bob] Taylor would say, ‘Type 2! Type 2!’ A Type 2 argument was that all of a sudden you had to explain the other person’s position back to them until they agreed with it, and then they had to explain your position back to you until you agreed with it, and by the time that had happened, you’d forgotten what you were arguing about.”
As for the "type 2 argument", yeah I'd love to be in a group where this was a norm. Too often people pick the weakest interpretation of something somebody said, and then try to discredit that interpretation.
podcast with alan kay. goddamn legendary
good sleeping material or torture
legend
appreciate this work. Thanks for sharing
Happy to see and hear from Alan!
Great to see Alan Kay in good shape. Thanks for posting.
🙂👍
Thanks for uploading this. I'm working on a video on the creation of the Dynabook and your videos have been very helpful. I had been hoping to find a recent version of Dr.. Kay
your videos are amazinggggg
Thanks for uploading this excellent talk by Kay sensei.
The links for the two papers handed out to be read before my talk are: "The Power Of The Context" - tinlizzie.org/VPRIPapers/m2004001_power.pdf "How?" - internetat50.com/references/Kay_How.pdf Let me know if you have trouble downloading these
Thank you for posing this - please can you tell me if there is a place where we can access the papers he shared with the students?
Here are references to the two papers: internetat50.com/references/Kay_How.pdf tinlizzie.org/VPRIPapers/m2004001_power.pdf Let me know if either doesn't work ...
The paper I believe was the "How" paper available here: internetat50.com/alan-kay-references/ it is copied to tinlizzie.org/IA as well.
This is the other paper, "The Power of The Context" citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/document?repid=rep1&type=pdf&doi=99585f59e292fcd5e60f35a5646ece2dd26f629b
Thank you for your contribution to open knowledge.
has been forever since i last listened to alan
Much much appreciated ❤
Thanks.
Many thanks for uploading these videos
Great talk. Insightful!
oooo i loved this! the way he views education is beautiful
exactly!!!! 20:20
Absolutely legendary 🔥🔥🔥
OMG, what a bunch of baloney. Kay clearly knew nothing about either biology or computer science. No wonder that he appeals to people who have absolutely no knowledge about programming.
It’s interesting hearing him speak after reading his paper titled “Man computer symbiosis.” It outlines a great deal of the technologies we now use and under development such as brain computer interfaces
I am a regular at this channel yet this is the first time I see this gem! Thanks to Allen Wirfs-Brock who shared it on Mastodon; and Jethro Tull is my favourite rock band!
Thanks for pointing out Allen's toot. Alan himself once thought that he had lost the video; but some Japanese kept a copy for some reason.
What a visionary
@34:00
Nice. Replace "Computer" with "AI" and his thought is very much relevant today.
I actually bought two of his books, the end of education and surrender the culture to technology, can’t wait to read them.
